Games of the XXVIII Olympiad, Athens 2004

The Olympic spirit invokes in many, passion, determination, dedication and the pursuit of excellence. Like the five interlocking rings, the Olympic Games bring together the world's finest athletes to compete against one another in one place, promising in the oath to compete "in true spirit of sportsmanship, for the glory of the sport and the honor of our teams".

The Ancient Olympics seem to have been held as early as 776 BC in Greece. The first modern Olympic Games was held in Athens in 1896 and in 2004, the Games will return to their origins as Athens hosts the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad. With reference to the Ancient Olympics, some of Singapore's popular Olympic sports are graphically illustrated on pebbles in this commemorative set of stamps.

Athletics (1st Local) demand stamina and determination. Track and Field events are widely encouraged in schools and athletic clubs. It is popular as a spectator and team sport.

Swimming (30cts) is a much loved sport in Singapore with several swimmers making splashes in the regional arena. The weather, natural setting and a large number of Olympic-sized pools account for the high rate of participation.

Singapore's only Olympic medal – a silver at the Rome Games in 1960 was in Weightlifting ($1).

Sailing ($2) is an increasingly popular water sports enjoyed by Singaporeans. Singapore being a tropical island has a natural and perfect setting for sea sports.
