The Bridges of London

LONDON & ITS THAMES' BRIDGES beautifully unite the city's history and commerce with the romance and thrill of conquering fast, tidal water, in a way that only a dynamic city and an elemental river can.

Always an impressive feat of engineering, the building of a bridge confers a sense of permanence. The site of London itself was established by the first Roman bridge of c. AD 50-90. But in 1998 history was reassessed when the remains of a Celtic bridge were found in the Vauxhall area, and predated the Roman bridge by 1500 years. Many notable bridge, each with its own story, now cross the Thames, including London Bridge (near where the old bridge stood for over 600 years), Tower Bridge, Chelsea, Hammersmith and Albert Bridges, and the latest, Millennium Bridge, erected as a footbridge to celebrate the turn of the century in 2000.
