The Friendly Games
4000 ATHLETES 72 NATIONS 17 SPORTS 10 DAYS
Throughout their 72 years of competition the Commonwealth Games have managed to build an envied spirit of friendly competition. While the winning of medals has always been a serious business, the carnival atmosphere of the games is unique in sport. In Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee year, Manchester provides the perfect platform for the jamboree which begins on 25 July 2002 and for the first time will incorporate able bodied and disabled athletes in parallel competition. It is a city steeped in sport, world renowned because of a certain football team but also possessing what are surely the finest all-round sports facilities in the land, and a lasting legacy for the entire nation.
