H.M. Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother

IN MEMORIAM

The great outpouring of warmth, celebration and gifts from the British people each birthday were testimony to the very special qualities of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother. She was born at the dawn of the twentieth century, in the closing months of the Victorian age. Through two World Wars, through incredibly far-reaching changes in society and the world, and as Duchess, Queen and family matriarch, she brought strength, dignity and moral purpose to her roles. But even more than this, she brought enduring warmth and humanity. When Buckingham Palace was hit by bombs in 1940 she memorably commented 'I feel I can now look the East End in the face'. Surely the Queen Mother witnessed more of the last century's momentous events that touched the lives of millions, and she held a unique place in the nation's heart.
